Alberta to close Energy War Room

The province is shutting down Canadian Energy Centre Ltd. (CEC), also known as the “Energy War Room.” The multi-billion-dollar agency was established by the UCP government under former Premier Jason Kenney to advocate for the Canadian, particularly the Alberta, energy sector. Since its inception in 2019, the Energy War Room has faced significant criticism and controversy.

Shortly after its establishment, the agency engaged in a heated exchange on Twitter (now called X) with The New York Times, accusing the newspaper of antisemitism and bias. This social media dispute led the CEO of the CEC to apologize to the publication. Less than a year later, the agency launched a petition against a Netflix children’s movie called “Bigfoot Family,” accusing the film of environmental brainwashing.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9204164/

NDP leadership hopeful, Kathleen Ganley, applauded the decision to dissolve the agency.

“The Canadian Energy Centre or War Room has been a consistent embarrassment to the province,” Ganley said. “It is most famous for attacking a children’s movie and stealing a logo. It can boast absolutely zero accomplishments.

The work of the CEC, along with its assets and mandate, will be integrated into the Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs.
