Calgary’s MEG Energy is starting a new chapter in the company’s history.
Derek Evans will be stepping down as President and CEO of the oil sands major as well as relinquishing his position on the company’s Board of Directors.
Current Chief Operating Officer, Darlene Gates will be taking over his position effective May 1st.
“Derek has completed the work he and the Board set out to accomplish on his recruitment to MEG as President and CEO in 2018,” said Jim McFarland, Board Chair of MEG Energy.
“Derek’s relentless focus on health and safety, operational excellence, emissions reduction, and talent development provide an enduring foundation for MEG’s future success.”
Darlene Gates will become the only woman currently heading an oil sands company, marking a significant milestone in the history of Canada’s Energy Sector.
Gates is an accomplished energy executive with over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, including global leadership roles with Imperial Oil and ExxonMobil. Prior to joining MEG in 2021 as the Chief Operating Officer, she served as the President of Exxon Mobil Alaska.
“Darlene has been an outstanding partner to me,” said outgoing CEO Derek Evans.
“With her knowledge of our business, commitment to our people, operational and commercial acumen, and strategic vision for our company, she is the ideal candidate to lead MEG forward.”
