Wood Buffalo RCMP is investigating a firearms complaint in Fort Chipewyan.
On January 2, 2024, at 11:09 p.m. RCMP in Fort Chipewyan responded to a firearms complaint in the hamlet located about 270 kilometers north of Fort McMurray.
Police were informed that an unknown person had discharged a gun at a residence and then fled on foot in an unknown direction.
After arriving on the scene, the police were unable to locate the suspect. No injuries were reported from the occurrence.
Law enforcement believes this was a targeted incident, and there is no concern for public safety.
Fort Chipewyan experienced a string of shootings in August of 2023 where homes were shot at and a vehicle was set ablaze prompting the Chief of the Mikisew Cree First Nation to order a lockdown.
In September the Athabasca Tribal Council declared a regional state of emergency in their five First Nations including those in Fort Chipewyan.
