Keyano College Athletics is hiring Tommy Sloan as head coach of the Huskies Women’s Volleyball Team.
Sloan, a McMurrayite himself, is no stranger to women’s volleyball at the college, having previously coached the team from 2014 to 2017.
In the 2015-16 season, Sloan coached the Huskies to a program record 13 victories and their first appearance in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Volleyball Championship since the 2009-10 season.
“Having Tommy return to Keyano College Huskies Athletics is a great benefit to our student-athletes and the entire campus,” said Jonathan Lambert, Director, Athletics and Recreation at Keyano College.
“Having guided the Women’s Volleyball program to the ACAC Playoffs before and considering his performance as a student-athlete with the Huskies, I look forward to supporting him and the entire program in achieving that goal again and more.”
After his first tenure with the Huskies, Sloan further honed his coaching skills at Brandon University and Niagara College.
Sloan’s hiring comes after a remarkable season for Keyano’s Women’s Volleyball team. Last year the team tied their record of 13 wins, but Sloan notes that many of the players have graduated from Keyano. He plans to go in with a clean slate of expectations.
“Last year was an exceptional season for them, but on the flip side there’s a whole bunch of those players that are not back; they’ve graduated or moved on,” says Sloan.
“I don’t want to say we need to continue going right from where we left off. We can still build off that success in a narrative way.”
In addition to the role of Head Coach for Women’s Volleyball, Sloan will work as the college’s Athlete Services Coordinator where he will serve as a link between student-athletes from all Huskies programs and the college to ensure they’re reaching their academic requirements and achieving their goals in the classroom.
