The eyes of Hollywood continue to look north towards Alberta.
Mayor Sandy Bowman is being brought in as a creative consultant and trainer for the upcoming season of the popular Netflix series, Cobra Kai.
Bowman, a skilled martial artist, trainer, and owner of Bowman’s Martial Arts is being brought in to add increased realism to the fight scenes for the series.
“In our first few seasons, fans told us that the fight scenes lacked realism,” said Josh Healed, co-creator of the series.
“We needed to show how middle-aged men really fight. We needed Sandy to whip them into shape.”
The series follows the characters of Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso as they live their middle-aged suburban lives decades after the events of the original Karate Kid movies.
Mayor Bowman worked extensively with Ralph Macchio, who plays Daniel LaRusso, as well as William Zabka, who plays Johnny Lawrence.
“Lawrence was great to work with,” says Mayor Bowman.
“But Macchio was a bit soft. More Ralph Wiggum than the Ralph Macchio of the Karate Kid years.”
The Wiggum nickname stuck, and Mayor Bowman says that fans can look for this as an “easter-egg” in the season, set to air on Netflix on September 9th, 2023.
Bowman first met the producers for the show during one of his charity MMA fights. They kept in touch, but never discussed doing projects together.
“The phone-call came out of nowhere,” said Mayor Bowman.
“It felt like an April Fools joke at first,” added the Mayor.
“It turns out, this is an April Fools Joke, and I’m hope everyone in the RMWB enjoyed having a laugh with Mix 103.7, and I”, said Mayor Sandy Bowman.
From everyone at Mix, Happy April Fools!
