A temporary injunction has been granted to prevent the RMWB from refusing to transfer EMS 911 calls to Alberta Health Services’ provincial centres.
AHS and the province filed for the order on Thursday after council approved a motion from Mayor Don Scott earlier in the week to have the local emergency communications centre once again handle all medical emergencies.
According to regional emergency services, they’ve had to intervene in roughly 20 per cent of calls since AHS took over in mid-January.
In a statement, Scott says they will respect the court’s decision.
“This does not mean the province is better at dispatching ambulances. It just means that this provincial government is willing to force us to comply.”
“Most concerning, given recent experience, it will negatively affect patient outcomes in my region.”
He adds they plan to continue fighting the issue in court.
