Wood Buffalo RCMP Receive Blessed and Braided Eagle Feather

A blessed and beaded eagle feather is being given to the Wood Buffalo RCMP.

It will serve as a new option for individuals who are providing a statement to the police – choosing between swearing on the Bible, affirming, or affirming with the feather.

The Mounties note the gift is considered one of the highest honours among Indigenous people.

It was blessed by Elder Tony Arcand, from the Alexander First Nation, and beaded by our local resident, Treasure Cooper.

“Our first objective is to work with community partners to ensure culturally sensitive supports are in place for victims, witnesses, offenders, and police officers,” said the RCMP in a release.

“Earning the trust and confidence of Indigenous Communities in Alberta remains a top priority for the RCMP.”

People can also use the eagle feather as a comforting item when speaking with the police. Non-Indigenous individuals are also welcome to use the feather.
