The RMWB is declaring a state of local emergency due to COVID-19.

The municipality announced on Friday this new measure which will help them get access to additional resources. This includes better access to healthcare supplies such as ventilators and masks.

They’re also given new powers such as the ability to control and prohibit parts of the region, the relocation of staff, and being able to take over properties to help combat the spread of the virus.

Before anything is done, Wood Buffalo council will need to give the green light.

“This is an evolving situation, but our top priority will always be the health, safety, and well-being of residents,” said Mayor Don Scott. “We are well-positioned to address the needs of our community and continue to work closely with other levels of government.”

This is the first time the region has declared a SOLE since the Horse River wildfire. A total of 25 communities across the province have issued a state of local emergency.

The RMWB is also recommending residents who have any symptoms to call Alberta Health Link at 8-1-1. Only call 9-1-1 if you’re in an emergency situation.

Number of Cases Across the Province

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, also announced on Friday 49 new cases of COVID-19 across Alberta.

This brings the total to 195 across the province, 17 of which being in the north zone.

According to the province’s case location map, four of the cases are in High Prairie, three in Slave Lake, three in Bonnyville, two in Barrhead, and one in Cold Lake.

The other four have not been confirmed in any region.
