The federal government is closing the border for the majority of international travelers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday new measures to help stop the potential spread of COVID-19.

As of right now, only residents, families of residents, aircrews, diplomats, and U.S. citizens will be allowed into Canada.

“Air operators will be required to complete a basic health assessment of every air traveler based on guidance from the public health agency of Canada,” said Trudeau.

People who have any symptoms of the coronavirus won’t be allowed into Canada.

Trudeau says they’re also setting up a support program for Canadians currently outside of the country.

“Canadian travelers will be able to get financial assistance to help them with the costs of returning home or temporarily covering their basic needs while they wait to come back to Canada.”

Only four airports will be allowed to take in international flights: Toronto Pearson, Montreal Trudeau, Vancouver International Airport, and Calgary International Airport.

Domestic flights are currently unaffected.

“I know that these measures are far-reaching, they are exceptional circumstances calling for exceptional measures,” added Trudeau. “These measures will help save lives.”

Local Flights

The Fort McMurray International Airport is seeing an impact on their flights.

Travelers are being advised to check the status of their flights before departing for the airport.

Meanwhile, crews are working to undertake extensive cleaning measures. This includes increasing the number of sanitizers and increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of flat surfaces.
