The ice rink at the Casman Centre may need some minor repairs after it was used for 24-hours straight.
The 3rd Annual ‘Handlebar Hockey’ game was held over the weekend where multiple players, young and old, played to raise funds for the Movember Foundation.
Overall, they were able to raise over $30,000.
Organizer Clinton Bretecher tells Mix News the entire weekend exceeded his expectations.
“It was phenomenal. All the people that came out to support us, the volunteers, the players, Hometown Hockey – it was an absolutely incredible weekend.”
The event has seen major growth over its three years.
They’ve been able to raise around $5,000 more each year and this time they had people fly in from the East and West coasts.
Bretecher believes more are starting to understand why this game is so important.
“The 24 hours is symbolic to the daily struggle that people endure when they’re battling prostate and testicular cancer or mental health issues – those don’t go away, they sit with you all day long.”
The final score was 146-141 with Team Red coming out on top over Team White.
A couple minor injuries, bumps and bruises, and a few colds were what was left after the final buzzer sounded.
“When you don’t get sleep for about 40-hours you’re not overly surprised when you come out of it with a cold but that’s a small price to pay for what we’re doing.”
